The objectives of interventional pain management are to pinpoint the source of a patient’s pain and to direct injections of medicine specifically to that source. If the lesion responsible for the pain cannot itself be treated, then intervention can target the nerves that mediated the pain in order to block nociception.
These include nerve blocks, nerve ablation, joint procedures, radio frequency procedures etc.
All of these procedures are performed using fluoroscopic imaging (Live X-ray imaging) or ultrasound to ensure precise needle placement, and a local anesthetic is used to numb the injection site.
